Mobility Consulting First. Vehicle Sales Second.
Buying a wheelchair accessible vehicle is different from buying a traditional automobile. The right solution isn't determined by the vehicle itself—it's determined by how the wheelchair user plans to travel, transfer, or drive every day.
The two most common wheelchair accessible vehicle conversion styles are shown here: Rear-Entry Conversions and Side-Entry Conversions. While both provide safe and reliable transportation, they are designed for very different mobility needs.
Rear-Entry Conversions
Rear-entry conversions (top video) are often the best solution for families, caregivers, and passengers who do not need to drive from their wheelchair. These vehicles allow the wheelchair user to enter through the rear ramp and ride comfortably in the center channel between two companion seats, allowing family members or caregivers to sit nearby while traveling. This creates a practical and affordable transportation solution while still allowing family members or caregivers to sit nearby.
Rear-entry conversions are typically easier to park, require fewer modifications to the vehicle, and can save families $20,000–$30,000 or more compared to a fully lowered-floor side-entry conversion. For many passenger-only applications, a rear-entry vehicle provides everything needed without paying for features that may never be used.
Side-Entry Conversions
Side-entry conversions (bottom video) are designed for greater independence and flexibility. These vehicles feature a fully lowered floor that extends farther forward, allowing access to the front passenger position and, in many cases, the driver's position.
For individuals who plan to drive from their wheelchair, a side-entry conversion is often required. These vehicles can be equipped with wheelchair docking systems, hand controls, electronic driving controls, transfer seats, and other adaptive driving equipment.
Many families also choose a side-entry conversion because it allows the wheelchair user to ride next to a spouse, family member, or caregiver in the front passenger area. This creates a more natural and social travel experience while providing greater flexibility for future mobility needs.
